Exterior Wash & Wax

Keep your car looking great and protect its value with the right washing and waxing routine.

Your car's paint job is more than cosmetic — it's a protective layer over the metal body. Once that paint starts to fail, rust can spread quickly and destroy entire body panels. Regular washing removes the chemicals, bird droppings, tree sap, road salt, and UV radiation that attack paint every day. Waxing seals and protects the clear coat, keeping your car looking newer for longer and maintaining its resale value. Here's how to do both properly.

1

How Often to Wash Your Car

Wash your car every 1–2 weeks under normal conditions. Increase frequency if you park under trees (tree sap and bird droppings are highly acidic), live near the ocean (salt air accelerates corrosion), or drive on salted winter roads. Road salt is one of the most damaging substances your car's body encounters.

2

Two-Bucket Washing Method

The best hand-wash technique uses two buckets: one with soapy water, one with clean rinse water. Dip your mitt in the soap bucket, wash a section, then rinse the mitt in the clean water before going back to the soap. This prevents dirt you've already picked up from scratching the paint on the next pass.

3

Use Car-Specific Soap — Never Dish Soap

Dish soap strips wax and degrades paint sealants. Always use a pH-balanced car wash soap designed for automotive paint. These lift dirt gently without stripping your protective layers. They cost about the same as dish soap and are available at any auto parts store.

4

Wash in the Shade

Never wash your car in direct sunlight. The sun heats the panels and causes soap and water to dry too quickly, leaving water spots and soap residue that can etch into the clear coat. Choose a shaded area or wash early in the morning or evening.

5

Dry With a Microfiber Towel

Air drying leaves mineral deposits from water that create water spots. Always dry with a clean microfiber waffle-weave towel, using a gentle patting and dragging motion — not circular scrubbing. Microfiber is soft enough for clear coat and absorbs far more water than regular towels.

6

Wax Every 3–6 Months

Wax creates a sacrificial layer over your paint's clear coat that takes the punishment from UV rays, pollution, and minor abrasions. Apply a car wax or paint sealant every 3–6 months. Modern synthetic sealants and ceramic coatings last longer than traditional carnauba wax and provide better protection.

7

How to Apply Wax Correctly

Apply wax in a thin, even layer using a foam applicator pad, working in straight lines (not circles) on one panel at a time. Allow it to haze (usually 5–10 minutes) then buff it off with a clean microfiber towel before it dries completely. Wax applied too thickly is harder to remove and wastes product.

8

Don't Forget the Undercarriage

The undercarriage of your car faces the worst conditions — road salt, water, and debris. Many car washes offer undercarriage rinse options. In winter states, rinse your undercarriage weekly if you're driving on salted roads. Rust that starts underneath is expensive and often invisible until it's severe.

⚠️

Bird Droppings and Tree Sap Must Be Removed Immediately

Bird droppings are highly acidic and can etch through clear coat permanently within hours in hot weather. Tree sap hardens and bonds to paint quickly. Keep a quick-detail spray and microfiber cloth in your car — remove these immediately, never when dried. Do not scrub; mist generously, allow to soak, then wipe gently.

Pro Tip from Carofix

If your car has swirl marks or fine scratches in the paint, a light-cut polish used before waxing will remove them and restore gloss. Apply polish with a foam applicator or dual-action polisher, then follow with wax to seal the surface. The difference in finish depth is remarkable and can make a 10-year-old car look fresh.
